Anne-Marie Jackson gave an impassioned and detailed report on her research into climate change and its effects on the Coast and its people
Anne-Marie studies how connections of wai(water),Moana(ocean ) and matauranga ( Maori knowledge) are beneficial for mauri ora ( flourishing health)and strives to create opportunities for Maori research that most significantly of all , serves Māori Communities. Anne – Marie likes her connection that she was born in the Mossburn and all of her studies and career has been at the University of Otago.Her most recent research collaboration of Coastal People and Southern Skies brings together education ,government and community partners across New Zealand and focuses on climate change resulting from ocean warming and acidification, sea level rise and climate and how these issues affect peoples identities, histories and wellbeing as coastal people.
This research and actual projects encompasses over 100 researches from all aspects of different organizations such as Coast Guard, Water safety and Niwa plus many others .These groups study a wide diverse set of subjects such as the tracking of Sperm whales along the coast and their migration into the Pacific Ocean,projects such as daisey planting trees on the Waikouaiti river,keeping water clear and alive in rivers and the sea like looking after kelp forests. Anne – Marie is excited about her work and to be part of a dream to improve climate change which is backed by research funds of $32million over 4.5 to 7 years is a very positive outlook on this ever increasing concern of Climate change and how it will affect future populations and cultures .
