Because of the Level 4 Lockdown, David very kindly agreed to speak to our clubs "Zoom" meeting (attended by 19 participants). He began by describing what an "archive" is, and what he as an "archivist" does.David then gave a fascinating presentation on three archives in the Hocken –
the 1st about Henry Pickerill & his wife Cecily who were pioneers in plastic surgery, this included stories about Henry’s childhood, how they met when both were doctors at University of Otago https://teara.govt.nz/en/
the 2nd archive was about Lance Richdale who started out with a background in teacher of agricultural studies but ended up as one of NZ’s foremost Ornithologists who was instrumental in setting up the sanctuary for Albatross on the Otago Peninsula. The archive provides details of his early life including his sporting excellence being captain of both the 1st 11 & 1st 15 at school. https://predatorfreenz.org/
The 3rd archive was about an amusing letter written to the General Manager of Union Steam Ship Co complaining about a lost boot during an overnight crossing of the ferry from Wellington to Lyttelton.– you will need to go to the Hocken to read it !!
