It was almost 20 years ago that the first Trees for Babies were planted in Fraser’s Gully in Kaikorai Valley.Trees for Babies now known as Trees for Families, initially started as a way for parents to mark the birth of their newborns. The project now covers a wide variety of family milestones such as an anniversary, birth, birthday, marriage, graduation, or memorial.
It is a partnership involving the DCC, Keep Dunedin Beautiful, and the Rotary Club of Dunedin and is supported by Taskforce Green, Hope and Sons and Blueskin Nurseries.
Plantings have been held at Roseneath and Bayfield, before moving to Magnet Street at the Harbour Cycleway around 10 years ago. There has been close to 1000 trees planted as part of this event since it began. A ‘forest of memories’ can now be seen growing on the harbour’s edge.
By planting a native tree, participants are adding to our city’s living landscape – and linking themselves with the hundreds of other individuals and families who have been involved in previous plantings over the years.
