The singing of patriotic songs, and pledge of allegiance to Britain by seven year old Ross Grimmett played a significant part in the downfall of Adolph Hitler - it must have done, because Hitler is long since dead whereas Ross is still very much alive! Seventyfive years later Ross, our guest speaker last week, shared his memories of growing-up in Dunedin during World War II. Setting the scene - a modest home in the Southeast corner of Mornington; a coal range that heated the water, cooked the food and burned the rubbish; hot water bottles; a "penny in the slot" telephone box down the road. Then came Rationing - of petrol, tea, sugar and knicker elastic. Singing of popular songs of the day (like "Rosie The Riveter") to keep spirits up. Black-outs, Air Raid Shelters, searchlights and sirens. No Macdonalds, but a cooked crayfish cost one shilling! Ross kept us entertained with his own style of humour, but also gave a good insight into the hardships faced.
Visit to New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame - 25th November
There will be a special opportunity for members to visit the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday 25th November at 5.30pm, hosted by the amazing Ron Palenski. There has been much public discussion in recent months about the future of this unique tribute to our nation's sporting successes, and this is a chance to see for yourself what all of the talk has been about!
There will be a small admission fee (it's usually $6 and Ron assures me that he might give us a discount!), and following the tour we will adjourn to the Best Cafe for a feed of blue cod.
If you are interested in coming along, please let me know by email (brucecowan751@gmail.com) by Monday 22nd November (also let me know if you want to come to the Best Cafe so that I can make a booking).
There will not be a lunchtime meeting that day.
Cheers
Bruce Cowan

Christmas Appeal
The Community Project Group is organising a Christmas gift appeal again this year. Donations will go to the Salvation Army’s clients. David McEwen naturally is well informed as to their needs and advises firstly that items, out of respect to the recipients, should be new. Soft toys are definitely not in need but gifts that are activity-based and help bring families together are especially good. Board games and books are most welcome as are vouchers for venues such Moana Pool, movie theatres, ten pin bowling, ice skating and similar. In lieu of gifts or vouchers, a cash donation would be
appreciated and the funds will be used to buy activity vouchers. Please bring any contributions you are able to make to our lunch time meetings on either December the 2nd or the 9th .

They provide information, education, support and options to all people within the greater Dunedin area, seeking to empower them to manage their own finances. DBAS is interested in people joining the Governance Committee. If you are interested in this community service please speak to Cameron.
