CaringStay Respite Care – Lizzie Scott (by Zoom)
Our speaker on 13 June was Lizzie Scott (Photo of Lizzie was taken from the CaringStay website).
Lizzie was born in Oamaru. Now 60 years of age, Lizze returned to NZ in 2020 after 30 years overseas.
Lizzie is now living in Wellington. Having experienced personally family and other acquaintances who were living alone and who, after being in hospital were destined to recovering with minimal or no external care.
This gave her the idea of developing a business model some 18 months ago whereby she would coordinate ‘hosts’ to care for ‘guests’ in their private homes of people in such circumstances.
She has now 21 hosts and is looking to establish many more. Hosts could receive a rental from their guests to supplement their income. Lizzie screens the people wishing to participate to ensure they meet criteria of a suitable host. She now has hospitals referring people to her to provide respite care.

Are you interested in going on a mid winter tramp?
for more information contact Malcolm Liddell malcolm.liddell@icloud.com

The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year after which the days begin to get longer and the nights get shorter. This makes it both a time of celebration and reflection: a time to celebrate the return of the Sun and the promise of longer days ahead but also a time to reflect on the past year and to set goals for the year ahead.
The winter solstice is also a time of astronomical significance and marks the beginning of Astronomical Winter. It is the day when the Earth's axis is tilted the most away from the Sun. This means that the Sun appears to be at its lowest point in the sky. After the winter solstice, the Earth's axis begins to tilt back towards the Sun, and the days start to get longer. This year, the solstice is due to occur over Dunedin skies on Friday, June 21, at 9.08am.  Dawn is at 07.46, Sunrise at 08.21, Sunset at 17.00 and Dusk at 17.35, and a day length of 09.48.19 hours.

Let's look forward to the Midsummer solstice on December 21st this year (picture above is a summer sunrise taken at Hampden Beach).
Meanwhile enjoy the Dunedin Winter Carnival happening on June 21st and June 22nd at First Church from 6 - 9pm. https://www.midwintercarnival.co.nz/event-info/#midwinter
