Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Fiona for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders - Update April 2023
The café has noted that many of our  Rotary members and guests are now ordering on arrival.  This makes it difficult for them  to manage staffing levels and keep up the level of service for us, as well as their other guests.
As a club, we appreciate the use of the venue facilities free of charge.
To maintain this it is appreciated if you would please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the lunch menu ahead of time!

Email orders will be accepted now up until 11am  orders@thedishcafe.co.nz

The updated $20 lunch menu (includes a drink) can be downloaded from here (effective 20 April 2023)

Stories
Last Weeks speaker - Donald Kerr
Don Kerr gave a very enthusiastic and informative presentation on the Rare Book Collection which is held in the Otago University Library. Don had worked in the Rare book collection for 18years and prior to that 15years in the Saint George Collection in Auckland .He is now retired but still holds  a very high interest in the subject and possesses  a wealth of information, even writing several books himself on the subject of specific authors and collections. The Rare Book collection is on the first floor and although not attended by staff it is freely available to the public by phoning for an appointment. In fact its available to readers worldwide via websites as many of the collections are catalogued and can be viewed on line. The library also ran 4 exhibitions a year to help promote the various collections and make the public aware just what is available to view. These can be found on line under “Otago Special Exhibitions”. There are a total of over 28000 books in the library accumulated over the years from many donations from many prominent benefactors. The main benefactor is Ezmond de Beer which, in his collection alone there is over 7000 books covering such subjects  as travel, architecture, garden guides  and history. Many other collections were noted from collectors and authors not well known to the audience, many of which hold first editions. The collections  cover a wide  range of subjects including archeology, Australian Pulp Fiction and even Erotica. As Don pointed out that this marvelous collection is a wonderful resource but no one knows about it. The mind boggles as what it might be worth in dollar value.

Centenary Book
As part of our club’s centenary celebrations Craig Radford has written a history of the last 100 years of Rotary in Dunedin.

While Craig’s book nods to the past 100 years, it really takes off from where Gordon Parry’s 75-year history ended to highlight the last 25 years of our club.

It is a rollicking good read that you won’t want to miss, we are taking pre orders now for $30 per copy or you can purchase on the night of our centenary dinner and after for $35 per copy.

So, get in quick with your pre order to katierslaughter@gmail.com

Salvation Army - Red Shield Appeal
The Community Projects group has agreed to support this appeal and  provide collectors for one collection point for one day ( Friday 12 May ) but we will need assistance from the wider club.
If you can help for an hour, please advise Bruce Collier brucec3210@gmail.com
