Welcome to my first bulletin!
On behalf of all members let's thank and acknowledge Bruce Collier for the sterling job he has done as our bulletin editor over the last three years. I hope he doesn't go too far away on holiday yet, I will need to pick his brains again!
As always, please send in your news and articles. Our weekly bulletin is important to keep you all informed and enthused about our lunch meetings, projects and events.

Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Katie for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders - Update August 2023
The cafĂ© has noted that many of our  Rotary members and guests are now ordering on arrival.  This makes it difficult for them  to manage staffing levels and keep up the level of service for us, as well as their other guests.
As a club, we appreciate the use of the venue facilities free of charge.
To maintain this it is appreciated if you would please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the lunch menu ahead of time!

Email orders will be accepted now up until 11am  orders@thedishcafe.co.nz

Menu Update
The Dish has updated our menu, bringing in some new options, effective from 31st August.

The updated $20 lunch menu (includes a drink) can be downloaded from here
Stories
Last Weeks Speaker - Olivia Wheeler

Olivia Wheeler introduced us to the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum, and it was quite something to get one's head around.  It is based around the philosophy of; Understand; Know; Do.

It is defined in the overview as; Understand the big ideas of New Zealand histories; Know the national, rohe, and local contexts; and Do think critically about the past, interpreting stories about it.

She went on the give us an example that would form part of the curriculum, the Dawn Raids, as one event throughout their time at school.   There would be others too, all well resourced for their particular class group.  Not every topic would be pleasant and it would take sensitivity to be able to discuss this, and potentially other topics.

This history curriculum would sit inside the social sciences as a whole and so integrate learning about the wider world.

The development of this curriculum was in response to kids asking to know more of New Zealand's past.

"Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable " was a quote Olivia used.  But she felt that New Zealanders would benefit from it in all sorts of ways.

 June Mills
June joined Rotary Dunedin in 1995, only a few years after Rotary International officially welcomed women into Rotary.
She was our first woman President (2001-02), and after many years of active service working on an array of 'extraordinary projects' and enjoying 'fantastic camaraderie', June was honored as a Life Member early last year.
