Last Weeks Speaker - George Sabonadiere
George spoke to the club for the third time in a year.  (He has been an Exchange Student and attended this year’s RYLA.)  He is currently studying law and politics at Otago.
George attended the 2021 Aspiring Leaders’ Forum in Wellington with over 100 others from throughout NZ. Rather than learning leadership skills, the Forum is designed to get participants reflecting on leadership and where they want leadership to take them.
Lectures were interspersed with small group activities and George felt that he benefited enormously, especially in relating to the theme of the Forum – Faith and Values.  Participants were challenged to consider what they actually believe in, and what values they stand for.
Speakers and small group leaders facilitated the theme. George particularly mentioned former PM Jim Bolger whose speech was a good example of this. Mr Bolger spoke not on his successes as a politician, but on the failures and what he learned from them.
George said he was also challenged by a Maori speaker who talked about his whakapapa and then asked, “What’s yours? Do you know it?”
His major takeaway was learning to ask what the law should be for maximum societal benefit, rather than what the law actually is.

Satellite Clubs - Could they be our Salvation?
The following is a discussion paper provided by Bruce Cowan, Chair of our Membership Group.

1. Our membership has been declining significantly in recent years, and that trend is likely to continue because of our demographic structure.
2. At the present rate of decline, the Club will cease to exist within 8 years.
3. Whilst the timing, location and format of our weekly meetings suit some people, one or more of these factors prohibits other people from joining us.
4. A satellite club is one way of arresting the declining membership, and has been tried and succeeded in other parts of NZ and Australia.

5. A satellite club is project focussed – the members are full members of our Club, but meet separately (unless they want to join our traditional weekly meetings), have their own leadership, and have a representative on our Board.
6. Meetings may be in person or online, and at a frequency that is determined by the satellite members. Meetings are primarily to organise projects.
7. Satellite club members are full members of the Rotary Club of Dunedin, and pay subscriptions at the same rate as other members (unless the Board decide otherwise). They are welcome to participate in full club projects and to attend the Club weekly meetings.
8. Usually there is something that links the satellite club members (eg a geographic area, an age range, a common interest or a professional link).
9. A suggestion for a satellite club for Rotary Dunedin is University of Otago staff.

10. To get it underway, several things are needed: a “champion” who acts as the initial driver and liaison, a project, some effective marketing and communications, and a willingness on the part of existing Club members to make it work.
11. Some Clubs in Australasia have more than one satellite club, with membership ranging from 6 – 20. Experience shows that a number of these satellite members transition into the parent Club over a period of time.
12. Are we willing to give it a go?
