Message from D.G. Nick Wood
As you will be aware (unless your based internationally) Westport on the West Coast of the South Island has been hit hard by flooding over the weekend. As part of District 9970 our next door neighbor, and soon to be fellow D9999 Rotarians,
Westport Rotarians have been busy assisting in the clean up and recovery effort.

Attached
(click here) is the mission brief and outline of what has been happening to date from PDG Gary Hopkinson.
Please contact Gary direct if you have the skills and the time to assist.
If you are able to assist financially then also please contact Gary to see what is needed most.

Its early days, so please keep those in Westport in your thoughts over the coming weeks and months ahead.
Stories
Last Weeks Speaker - Allan Dippie
Allan has been in business with his brother for 40 years.  His first job was delivering newspapers, both night and morning.  Punga Logs Unlimited was their first business venture.  Selling products has been at the core of all their business growth, and they now have annual turnover of $200 million, of which half is retail sales and the balance is property development and associated works.  Garden centres have been a major part of Allan’s business for many years and he has his own nursery in Southland as his source of supply.  He started Willowridge Property development in Wanaka in 1993.
To date he has concentrated his efforts in Otago and Southland and he cited a shortage of staff as a limiting factor in the growth of their businesses.  His two main messages for success in business were (a) the importance of repeat customers, and (b) the benefits of vertical integration in the property development sector, where they control as many of the inputs as possible.

Who knew that a world-leading authority on viruses including COVID-19, was based here in Dunedin?
As a young girl Jemma Geohegan was “weirdly, seriously into dance”. She was good enough to be accepted into the Scottish Ballet, performing on stages from London to Glasgow and Edinburgh. But at 18 years old she decided life as a ballerina held too many uncertainties and too few opportunities. It wasn’t for her.

Instead she studied evolutionary biology and virology which led to her current role as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Otago University with a strong research focus on emerging infectious disease.

Jemma will update us on the more infectious India variant & the even more infectious variants that are coming, she will also tell you why international travel is going to be difficult for the next 2 years – don’t miss this if you are planning international travel.
