As part of the Trees For Families event, the Club sponsored a tree to honour the memory of the late Lindsay Brown. This was planted by members of Lindsays family: Amanda, Eleanor and Nicola
Hilary, an elected member of the Otago Regional Council, gave us an "insiders" view of the sometimes frustrating process of developing a local plan to implement central government rules regarding water quality. She began by referencing a recently published book "Upstream on the Mataura (Dougal Rillstone)" with examples of past abuse of our waterways, but finished with further examples from the same book suggesting that it was "not all doom and gloom". One of the hurdles to overcome is the issue of time-frames e.g. to enable public consultation and submissions - Council is only just finalising the plan relating to 2017 rules (meanwhile government introduces 2020 changes). Consequently in one case they have been forced into preparing a submission opposing its own plan!
How well do you know your club members?
From time to time we will feature one of our club members by presenting five fun facts about them. Your task is to attempt to identify them. To kick things off:
1. My Great-great-great-grandfather fought in the Battle of Waterloo
2. I have shaken hands with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales
3. I carried a coffin through the streets of Palmerston North during anti Vietnam War protests in the 1970's
4. My first vote in a General Election was cast for the Values Party
5. I was once rescued off a mountain by Search & Rescue helicopter
