Stories
Polio Movie Event 2020
On 12 November, the new movie I Am Woman will start showing in New Zealand cinemas.  It’s the story of seventies singing sensation, Helen Reddy.
We’re pleased to tell you that I Am Woman is this year’s Polio Movie Event, raising funds for Rotary’s #1 cause and we will be running an event at the Rialto Cinema, at 8:00 pm on Wednesday 21 October 2020.
The great news is that the film distributors have agreed for Rotary to have the exclusive rights to show the movie in New Zealand cinemas during October.
Shot in Sydney with a largely downunder cast and crew, the story traces the life of the singer / songwriter from the time she arrives in New York and it includes all her biggest hits.
Clearly, arranging gatherings of people in 2020 has a few more challenges than usual!  However, with the appropriate measures, we can still do it.
This year’s Polio Movie Event is being run as a tribute to Sir Clem Renouf, the RI President for 1978/79 who hailed from Ingham, Queensland.  Sir Clem, who passed away on 11th June, was a giant in Rotary’s history and was one of the leading figures in our fight to end polio.
So let’s have some fun—and raise lots of funds for polio!

Supporting KiwiHarvest
Rotary Dunedin members, along with members of other Rotary clubs, collected at five supermarkets last week as part of Random Act of Kindness Day. Shoppers were generous in their support, with at least 1,000 kg (yes 1 tonne) of groceries (estimated value more than $5,000) passed on to be distributed by KiwiHarvest.
Last Weeks Speaker
Last week two of our own members filled the speakers "slot" in our programme.
First Bruce Cowan presented a potpourri of short topics including the well intentioned (but somewhat unsuccessful) attempts by one government agency to meet CoVid-19 requirements; the Challenges of the English Language (and a written test on "Oxymorons" combined with the Sergeants session); a "Membership Moment" focusing our thoughts on potential club members; and an introduction to the Rotary Oceania website https://rotaryoceania.zone/.
Then John Henderson told us about the work of the Dunedin Rhododendron Group and their specialist rhododendron collection at Tannock Glen, one of Dunedin's hidden treasures.

Our speaker this week will be Norcombe Barker, Director of Larnach Castle.  Norcombe will be talking to us on the impact of Covid-19 on tourism in Dunedin and offer some thoughts on the future tourism activities in the area.  An insight into one of the jewels in Dunedin's crown and an interesting, thought provoking presentation is assured.
