The Dunedin Rotaract Club is a group of 18-30 year olds, mainly students, but also a few young professionals, and we’re involved in a pretty broad range of community activities. Obviously due to covid, we haven’t done as much as we’d hoped, but since lockdown we've been getting back into it. We held a session of Baking Lives Better, one of our recurring projects where we bake biscuits and then deliver them to the hospital as a thank you to the awesome workers, and as something to brighten the day for the patients. We also helped out at the tree planting at Smaill's Beach (as pictured), which was an awesome morning, and a total of about 700 trees were planted. Earlier in the year we ran another Baking Lives Better, and also had a team go to help out at the Weetbix Tryathlon.
Coming up (depending on the covid situation), we've got a group participating in and volunteering at the Stadium Climb, to raise funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ, as well as a Random Acts of Kindness day on campus, another tree planting, and some social events for club bonding. We've also just elected our new exec, who've got some really exciting ideas and projects planned for next year!
Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old war veteran whose record-breaking fundraising efforts captured the nation’s (and the worlds) hearts has been recognised with a Triple Ruby Paul Harris Fellowship. The recognition which has been championed by Flitwick Vale Rotary Club, who are based close to Captain Sir Tom’s home in Bedfordshire, was given during a virtual ceremony held over Zoom. Captain Sir Tom, who aimed to raise £1,000 in aid of NHS Charities in the weeks leading up to his 100th birthday by walking laps of his garden, ended up raising more than £32 million. During the virtual ceremony, Captain Sir Tom revealed he had been a part of Rotary earlier in his life and had in fact been a member of March Rotary Club in Cambridgeshire.
Here is an update for those following the Secondary Schools Speech Competition. Despite a good effort she could only manage third place, the final results being: First: Isobel Smith Wanaka Rotary Club (Mt Aspiring College) Second: Sam White Invercargill North Rotary Club (Southand Boys High) Third: Laura Canton Dunedin Club (Logan Park HS) Fourth :Sadie Wech Winton Club (Central Southland College) Wikinson Rogers Law were again sponsors and the 1st prize winner will receive $1000.00, the 2nd will receive $500.00, 3rd $300.00, and 4th $200.00.
Co deputy chair of the community and culture committee, council representative on the Mosgiel Community Board, Council appointment on the Toitu Board, Council appointment on the Dunedin Public Art Gallery acquisitions committee - Carmen made quite an impression with her "Are you mad?" questioning of her colleagues sanity regarding speed limits and painted dots on the main street.
The five week roster is the most accurate and members are urged to check the Duty Roster webpage regularly. Club Management Group.

In the meantime, if anyone has ideas for activities and events we could promote, or suggestions for promoting who we are and what we do, please let us know. All ideas are very welcome!
