Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Katie for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders @ the dish cafe-
Please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the menu ahead of time.
New message from the cafe, April 2024
1. Pre-orders help us to be able to provide the service that you are all expecting and that we are happy with.
2.When we receive orders at the counter it also affects our regular customers and their wait time.
3.If we receive an order at the counter, it will come out after all the pre-orders and customer orders are complete, so there may be significant delays.

For members and friends/guests who choose to come along but not purchase a Rotary lunch, a $5 contribution to room hire is applied by the cafe (see menu).  As a club, we appreciate the continued use of the venue facilities.

Email your order to orders@thedishcafe.co.nz by 11am

Stories
Rotary Dunedin Life Membership awarded to Claire Haines
Claire Haines is very special to our club, she was made an Honorary Member in 1997 due to her always being actively involved with her late husband Peter’s Rotary activity within the club.

After Peter’s retirement, they shifted to Timaru, and both joined the Rotary Club of Timaru North. Claire was awarded a further PHF for her community service in 2004 and served as the President of the Timaru North club in 2004-5 and was then made an Honorary member in 2019.

When she shifted back to Dunedin in 2020, she once again joined Dunedin Rotary, and we have enjoyed her company since that time.

It was with great pleasure and special congratulations that President Katie announced Claire as a life member of our club.

President Katie, Claire Haines and Claire's daughter Sara Paulin.

Sara said 'Mum was very chuffed indeed', and thanked the club for making their day☺️

Following the presentation, Sara said a few words to members to acknowledge the award:

Hello I’m Sara Paulin. Claire’s youngest daughter.
It’s lovely to see mum being recognised for her work with Rotary over the years.
Mothering 7 children then working full time as a teacher she always looked for that little bit extra out of life.
I remember a cool Rotary calendar picture of mum. The September shoot from memory. It is a beautiful shot of her in her tramping gear, pulling out wilding pines. She was always in boots n all. Literally!
Mum also loved the Rotary book fundraisers and especially the dictionaries in schools visits. She is always happy around kids.
Mum has made many lifelong friendships thru Rotary. We hosted an American Rotary Exchange student Maureen Cowperthwaite back in the ‘80s. Mum, Maureen and extended families have since travelled together and are still in close contact.
Mum and the family are very grateful for the support you have given her over the years. Thursday meetings have definitely been a highlight ☺️. She certainly lives the Rotary motto of service above self!

To read more about Claire, follow this link to our December 2023 Bulletin when we celebrated Claire's last formal lunch meeting with the club at our Christmas lunch.

Jonathan Usher - Participatory Philanthropy
This week’s speaker was our own Jonathan, and was a follow-on presentation from his recent discussion with the club about the J R McKenzie Trust.

Jonathan Usher and Grant Chirnside (pictured above) who alongside another Rotary Dunedin member Neville Caird, have collectively served 60 years with the JR McKenzie Trust. Jonathan was formally congratulated for his 20 years of outstanding service to the trust at a function in Wellington last week.
As Jonathan steps down from his role on the JR McKenzie Trust Board, Grant will join as a trustee. Grant has already spent 10 years administrating the JR McKenzie Youth Education Fund in our Rotary District.

President Katie introduced Jonathan's topic by telling us that (the tongue twisting term) Participatory Philanthropy is the philosophy of centering community leadership, wisdom, and voices in grant making.

Jonathan spoke us about the grandson of Sir J R Mckenzie, Peter McKenzie. Peter had been brought up being inspired by conservation and his 21st birthday gift was a substation parcel of Rangatira Ltd shares. He made a gift of one third of those shares to form a Nature Reserve Trust. This Trust purchased land near Waikanae and developed the Nga Manu Nature Reserve. In addition, Peter also established the Jayar Charitable Trust, wanting to make a substantial difference to New Zealanders lives.
In 2011 Peter McKenzie seeded the idea of spending all of its funds on one focus over a period of up to 20 years.

Following Peter’s death in 2012, the Trust was renamed the Peter McKenzie Trust and the vision of the Trust is -  Imagine an Aotearoa New Zealand where all our children, young people and mokopuna flourish.

With 28% of Kiwi children living in low income households where their caregivers are struggling to provide the basics, the Trust wants to ensure tomorrow’s children do not suffer the effects of living in poverty.

The Trust called for ideas to support its vision and of the 259 ideas received, nine projects were developed in partnership and funded.
Johnathan explained that participatory philanthropy has been used,  i.e. sharing power - money is power. Sharing power is a further step in the Trust’s journey towards trying to build a healthier, more equitable and effective ecosystem.

He showed a number of diagrams to demonstrate how participatory approach works, and finished with a quote that Peter McKenzie liked:

“If everything you back succeeds, you haven’t taken enough risks”

Cheese Roll Fun Fact #2
The first recipes for a version of cheese rolls (a.k.a. Cheese Roll-ups, Southern Sushi) appeared in South Island cookbooks in the 1930s.
They gained popularity in the 1950s and 60s, as sliced bread became more common in New Zealand
