Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Fiona for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders - Update April 2023
The café has noted that many of our  Rotary members and guests are now ordering on arrival.  This makes it difficult for them  to manage staffing levels and keep up the level of service for us, as well as their other guests.
As a club, we appreciate the use of the venue facilities free of charge.
To maintain this it is appreciated if you would please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the lunch menu ahead of time!

Email orders will be accepted now up until 11am  orders@thedishcafe.co.nz

The updated $20 lunch menu (includes a drink) can be downloaded from here (effective 20 April 2023)

Last Weeks Speaker  - Campbell McNeill
Campbell McNeill - Ōtepoti Futures Trust Presentation

Campbell is a director of  ahha which has offices in Auckland, Dunedin and Queenstown. The team at ahha want to create a truly regenerative Aotearoa and refence the UN Sustainable Goals as the basis for their work.

Campbell spoke to us about a relatively new concept to Dunedin to redevelop a historic building in Moray Place, the Pioneer Women’s Hall which is around 150 years old. In the redevelopment of the building, ahha has introduced the concept of Community Land Trusts. The goal is for the income earned for the tenancies to provide funding for further development, be able to access materials at wholesale prices and to be able to provide perpetual affordable housing.

In 2021 the Otepoti Futures Trust was formed, and the Women’s Association gifted the property to the Trust. To date the project has been through a feasibility study and community engagement and is currently in the design stage. Construction is expected to start in January 2024. The building itself has many issues – it is run down, poor access, is earthquake prone and  has issues with fire protection. The goal of the development is to increase the capacity of the building by extending the upper floor, reconfiguring the ground floor and ensuring the acoustics in the building will allow for mixed use. This will allow the current tenants to continue using the building. It is intended the ground floor will have an art gallery space with the first floor a co-working space. The building has an Art Deco façade and the design celebrates this as well as paying homage to the historic use of the building with a Remembrance Shrine to the Suffragette Movement. There has been extensive legacy and heritage consultation.
Campbell and the team at ahha are passionate about their work and I am sure the members will watch the progress of the building with interest.

Ah-Lek and Friends
In a follow-up to the story of the German POW and the Kiwi soldier who became friends, Assistant Governor Ah-Lek Tay reports that he was able to meet with Michael Staude (grandson of Hans-Ehrhardt Oberlander ) during the recent RI Convention in Melbourne. A lawyer, with 3 children, he looks after the youth part of his club and is keen to send his eldest child to NZ for an overseas experience.  They do a lot of exchanges.  He and the children all speak English, he is excellent.
Would anyone like to home-host a teenage boy for a fortnight or so during July/August next year? Contact Ah-Lek if you are interested.
