Obituary: Darrel Robinson KStJ
Sadly, Darrel lost his battle with Cancer and passed away on Wednesday last week.
Darrel joined the club in February 2007 initially serving on the Vocational Committee, and each year took a major role in organising the club speakers for our Vocational Months. He was a keen advocate for the “Pride of Workmanship Award”, the “Business Ethics Award” and” Books in Homes” through the Duffy Programme.
In 2019 he joined the Club Administration Committee and helped to arrange interesting speakers at our meetings.
In March 2020 he was one of the five “Caretaker” Rotarians during the "CoVid-19 lockdown" and in July 2020 was appointed Director responsible for Club Administration (now named Club Management group) on the Board.
Darrel was instrumental in organizing and implementing two award winning club projects.
1: The Orokonui Track Project: (2007 – 2012) Darrel used his engineering expertise and experience in dealing with regulatory bodies, especially in the design, consenting, prefabrication and construction of the bridges involved.
2: The West Harbour Walkway Project: (2012 – 2018) Darrel was joint project manager for this
He was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his service, and subsequently a PHF +1 Sapphire
Darrels other interests included Carpentry, Model Engineering, Photography, Tour Guiding and the Order of St John
His funeral will be held on Wednesday 12 May, at 2.00 pm, in Hope & Sons chapel.
Obituary: Jan Tucker QSM
The club is sad to announce the passing of Jan Tucker after a battle with cancer. Jan was a strong advocate for all things community. Most notably she served as an elected member of the Chalmers/ West Harbour Community Board for more than 20 years. Jan was also an active and passionate leader of the Keep Dunedin Beautiful Committee since 1996.
Jan joined Rotary Dunedin in November 2016 and was most recently a member of the City & Community committee. Her encouragement and support for the long term Trees for Families project relationship between Keep Dunedin Beautiful and our club, has resulted in an incredibly successful project partnership. Jan’s leadership and contribution to the Trees for Families project and Keep Dunedin Beautiful was celebrated with planting of a Totara tree on Mother’s Day, 9 May, 2021.
Jan also played bowls for many years. She was a life member of Bowls Dunedin, had governance roles in bowls at national levels and was a volunteer cruise ship guide among other community service roles. She was awarded a QSM for services to the community.
Jan was a very long-serving staff member of Logan Park High School, she taught primarily in the Physical Education department, and for many years was also a House Dean, looking after the pastoral needs of a large group of students (discipline, welfare and guidance) and excelled in this role. Jan lived for most of her married life in Purakanui, and after husband Kevin died she became increasingly involved in the West Harbour community.
Jan was an amazing lady and a really good example of selflessness! When emailed at the end of last year after finding out about her cancer, she replied “it’s a bit of a bummer” and said she had valued her time in Rotary and the people she had met.

Our RYE student Sydney Scott spoke to the club about her experiences in Austria during the CoVid-19 pandemic
Congratulations John Drummond
Recently, John Drummond was honoured with a PHF Sapphire +1 award for his continuing contributions and leadership to our club and the community.
Auction "Follow-up"
Two 4.5m trailer loads of firewood sold at the Charity auction were successfully ‘chucked’ onto the trailer and towed away for delivery at destinations in Maia and Fairfield. Thanks to City&Community team members, Brian, David Neill, Fiona and Iain (who came to help, but unfortunately wasn’t needed due to the early start and extraordinary efficiency of the woodchucking team!).
Standing 1.83m tall and weighing 120kg, Kees Meeuws had the perfect build for a prop, with the mobility of a loose forward. Kees played 42 tests for the All Blacks between 1998 and 2004, with a remarkable knack for scoring tries – a rarity for a prop – scoring 10 test tries in total.
Despite playing rugby like a rampaging bull in a china shop, Kees is certainly anything but a stereotypical rugby player off the field. A renaissance man, Kees is a larger than life flamboyant character with diverse interests, he is an artist, author, fisherman/diver, hunter and cook.
The five week roster is the most accurate and members are urged to check the Duty Roster webpage regularly. Club Management Group.
