Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.

Deb Gelling and Shelby Sanderson of Presbyterian Support Otago gave us an overview of the work they do to support the community in many areas ranging from budgeting advice, food banks, and family support services to energy audits that help people reduce their energy bills. The LED lighting project that was organised by our Community Project team’s quiz night and other fundraising efforts back in November 2020, has now been completed. In 2021 we supplied LED lighting to 5 household contacts of the Dunedin Salvation Army and this week, Deb Gelling and Shelby Sanderson accepted our ‘cheque’ of $1500 funding and $200 of LED bulbs on behalf of their clients who will benefit from having some energy saving LED lights installed in their homes.
NightnDay Foodstores Ltd are a Dunedin based business established in 1983. From the initial Regent St store, there are now over 50 stores across the country, making them the third largest food store chain operating in New Zealand. The businesses thrive under their take away food service model but the company’s goals of being able to supply essential grocery items for customers has been exceptionally challenging. General Manager Matthew Lane spoke to us about the two big supermarket chain’s duopoly over the wholesale supply of basic grocery items across New Zealand. NightnDay stores as wholesale customers of Countdown and Foodstuffs have had to deal with short notice on and off again supply chain deals and huge 40% pricing markups. Matthew has been outspoken and hardworking on this issue, he has contributed to the Commerce Commission’s Grocery Study investigation whose report was released in March this year. Unfortunately he told us that the final report fell far short of the mark in being able to ‘fix’ the outrageously unfair and non- competitive system. Despite government ultimatums announced in August designed to address problems with the system, the changes may not make much of an impact in the long run while the two large supermarket chains hold their control over what is a 2.2 Billion dollar industry sector.
Rotary Day of Action, Saturday 24 September- call for volunteers to collect food at a supermarket between 9am and 3pm
It’s happening again! We are part of a combined Dunedin and Mosgiel Rotary food/grocery item collection day in conjunction with Kiwi Harvest at 6 supermarkets around the city.
We have been allocated the Countdown Dunedin South (323 Andersons Bay Road) although the more the merrier as we are supporting other clubs some of which have supermarkets with two entrances to cover!

The Queens portrait
Nice to see the Queens portrait dusted off and displayed for probably the last time. As President Fiona reflected, this together with one of Rotary founder Paul Harris,was once an important part of the meeting room set-up.
Our rather faded copy is a print of an original painting by Leonard Monro Boden (31 May 1911 – 15 November 1999) a Scottish portrait painter who painted 19 portraits of members of the British Royal family, including ten of Queen Elizabeth II and five of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Boden's daughter, Daphne, was an accomplishrd harpist who sometimes played the harp for the Queen while her father painted. Portraits of other dignitaries included three Lord Mayors of London, and Margaret Thatcher. Pope Pius XII was painted by Boden in 1957; it was the only portrait that Pius granted sittings for. The portrait was later hung in the Vatican.
Tanya Syddall has 23 years’ experience in the building engineering and construction industry in Australia and more recently in New Zealand.
As Director of Campus Development, Tanya is accountable for the planning and delivery of the Strategic Capital Works program – the biggest investment in planning and capital projects in the University’s history.
