Report from Isaac Ottrey (O.B.H.S.) who recently went on an Outward bound experience.
As I was leaving Dunedin on the 5th of July, nervous was an understatement. I was heading into the unknown, and about to meet a bunch of random people who I was about to spend the next three weeks with. But I needn’t have worried as within hours of being there I was already feeling comfortable with the watch (group) I was about to spend the next 21 days with. At the start of the course, we soon found out that giving away secrets as to what we were doing was not something our instructors were keen on doing. This was because they wanted to teach us to ‘live in the moment’ by letting go of the past and not waiting for the future. As I progressed through the course the idea of ‘living in the moment’ became one of many things I was going to take away from the course. While on the course we took part in many awesome activities, some of these being: kayaking, tramping, coasteering, sailing, a high ropes course, and a two-night solo, just to name a few. All of the activities or schemes as OB calls them were not only fun to take part in, but also provided us with many key learnings and life skills. Personally, my highlight would have been our 3-day sailing journey. This was because it was something I’d never experienced before and also because we got to sail around a pretty impressive part of the country. Over the course, the thing that probably challenged me the most was the 2-night solo. This was because I found it hard not being able to communicate with other people, passing time, and having a feeling of loneliness. Over my time at Outward Bound there were many points where I was challenged or doubted myself. But there was one thing that my instructors Claire and Harlie would reiterate. And that was Plus Est En Vous or ‘There is more in you’. This was something that got me through a lot of challenges over the course of my time at OB and has stuck with me. This was my key takeaway from my Outward Bound experience and I’m now pushing myself to apply this to my day-to-day life. Over my time at Outward Bound I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I took part in many awesome activities, met some awesome people, challenged myself, and took some beneficial learnings and skills away. I would like to express my gratitude to Rick Wellington, the Rotary Foundation, and the JR McKenzie Trust for offering me this amazing opportunity.
Interplast is a Rotary initiative which many of us probably know little about. Through a partnership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Interplast sends fully qualified Australian and New Zealand volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to the Asia Pacific region to provide free surgical treatment for patients who would otherwise not be able to afford access to such services. Treatment is aimed at providing function and mobility for conditions such as cleft lip and palate, tumours and burns scar contractures. They also focus heavily on facilitating medical training and mentoring for in-country medical personnel. Interplast is funded by Government, corporate supporters, Rotary Clubs and Districts throughout Australia and New Zealand and donations from the public.
