Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Fiona for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders - Update April 2023
The cafĂ© has noted that many of our  Rotary members and guests are now ordering on arrival.  This makes it difficult for them  to manage staffing levels and keep up the level of service for us, as well as their other guests.
As a club, we appreciate the use of the venue facilities free of charge.
To maintain this it is appreciated if you would please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the lunch menu ahead of time!

Email orders will be accepted now up until 11am  orders@thedishcafe.co.nz

The updated $20 lunch menu (includes a drink) can be downloaded from here (effective 20 April 2023)

Stories
Last Weeks Speaker  - Sean Brosnahan
Sean told a fascinating story of the government barracks, and the immigrants who lived in them.
Say Cheese!
The first recipes for a version of cheese rolls (a.k.a. Cheese Roll-ups, Southern Sushi) appeared in South Island cookbooks in the 1930s.
They gained popularity in the 1950s and 60s, as sliced bread became more common in New Zealand, becoming a fundraiser for Schools and Sports Groups.
Recently the Community Projects group of our club decided to make and sell Cheese Rolls to raise funds for the redevelopment of Rotary Park.
Orders for 477 dozen rolls were received (5,724 rolls), requiring 275 loaves of bread, 82 kg cheese, 8 kg onion soup mix and 1 kg mustard powder.
Twenty club members, partners, friends and family members were involved in the making, spread over a full day Saturday and Sunday morning.
Net profit was of the order of $1,200 which will be split between The Rotary Foundation (10%) and Rotary Park Redevelopment (90%).
As an aside, the end crusts from the bread were collected by Dunedin Craft Distillers and will be used in the production of Gin!!
Road Safety Programme
Assistant Governor Ah-Lek Tay is seeking Rotary Volunteers (six per day for 3 days) to assist with a Rotary Youth Driver Awareness presentation in the Glenroy Auditorium on June 13, 14, 15th from 8.45 am until 2.00 pm. This presentation is aimed at senior High School students - between 150 and 180 students per day. The RYDA workshop consists of six interactive 30 minute sessions on a range of road safety topics.
N.B. The sessions are presented by specialist facilitators - the role of the Rotary volunteers is that of a "guide" for each group. More details on the  programme are here https://rse.org.au/about-ryda/
If you can spare a day (or two or three) please sign-up at   https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Z9qBXwZ8BrJ3o4NsT7f3G_V90N7JlRSMoXGipLRnXQ4/edit#gid=1946811273
The Spitfire Adventures
At a recent meeting Ron Mackintosh introduced us to "The Spitfire Adventures" - a series of short, fun stories about three boys and their dog flying around the world in their cardboard Spitfire plane having adventures together.
The book was written by Rons nephews 10, 9, and 8. Rory at six had a kidney transplant from his Dad now looking at a second kidney transplant. The boys wrote this 72 page book during lockdown to remember V E day in Britain. It's a great read for kids with all profit going to "Kidneys for life". Wonderful imagination, great illustrations and a rollicking good story. Ron is taking orders $20 per copy.
