Stories
Last Weeks Speaker - Derek King
Derek King CEO of Cargill Enteprises and a Rotarian gave a passionate talk touching on 3 different aspects of his life.
Derek has been at Cargills for fourteen years and related the impact that Covid 19 had on their staff ,which although they lost approx 8 at the time ,they are again now building and performing at a level better than they were  pre Covid. The core business of pallet construction ,boxes for food items, food packing has enabled the organisation to become debt free which in itself can be considered a milestone achievment. Derek describes the staff culture within Cargills as social, offering them training, events such as  special Olympics and a Graduation ceremony which, are very  inspiring for them ,and critical to their ongoing training while  learning skills not available elsewhere.
Dereks direction in life is changing in a week when he leaves Cargills and moves to Ranfurly where he has purchased the Manitoto Hardware and Garden store. He comments challenging but exciting times ahead.
Derek will continue with Rotary as Chair of the 9980 District Merge Group for the ultimate joining of 9970 and 9980 Districts. He is also chair of the District Membership committee giving excellent insight on maintaining club members, which is critical to membership retention for all organisations ,as well as the push to find new members.

From after-school yard boy to managing director...
Allan Dippie and brother Martin were Dunedin schoolboys when they came up with the entrepreneurial idea of selling ponga logs. They headed to the Catlins at weekends to source them from farmers who were clearing land,
After leaving school, Allan completed a commerce degree at Lincoln. He intended becoming a stock agent, and was offered a job with Wrightson, but instead he decided to start up a one-man landscaping business. This in turn led to the purchase of Nichols Garden Centre
In 1993 Allan and wife Elizabeth formed Willowridge Developments Ltd. Their first project was Meadowstone - a comprehensive residential development of nearly 400 sections on an extraordinary site in inner Wanaka. Willowridge also specialises in other areas of Central Otago, including Clyde, Luggate and Lake Hawea.
The company continues to work closely with local councils in order to undertake developments that both meet the needs of the local community and environment.
Instigator of the "Wheels at Wānaka" Easter event, Allan has his own collection of more than 100 tractors in his Wanaka shed, (and each has a story).
Allan is described by longtime friend Peter Jackson as "a real character". His presentation this week would be an ideal opportunity to invite a guest, friend or colleague to our meeting.
