Mahana Services

What is Mahana?

At Community House, we share the building with Richard McDonald (left) and Sagar Khemani (right).

Richard and Sagar work for Mahana, part of Ngā Kete Mātauranga Pounamu (NKMP). NKMP is a not for profit charitable trust providing a wide range of health, well being and social support services to individuals, whānau and communities across the southern region, from Invercargill through to Waitaki.

Established 26 years ago, NKMP has its roots in Invercargill, where most of its services are based. The organisation has been operating in Dunedin for five years and now delivers three key services locally: Southern Stop Smoking, drug and alcohol addiction support, and a needle exchange service.

NKMP receives approximately $3 million annually in Ministry of Health funding and undergoes an external audit every two years. Its services are free and open to everyone aged over 14, reflecting its commitment to making support accessible to all, regardless of background. Support can be provided individually or in groups, with teams sometimes working with up to 25 people at a time. The organisation also runs outdoor activities for parents and children, including hunting and water based activities, to build connections and support positive family experiences.

Richard shared some of the guiding principles that have shaped his work over the years. One that particularly resonates with him is, “Don’t underestimate the power of touch and words of empowerment.” It reflects the importance of human connection, encouragement and treating people with dignity.

Beyond its Dunedin services, NKMP employs approximately 140 staff and delivers a broad range of specialist support, including mental health services, disability support, financial capability, methamphetamine treatment, crisis respite, cancer support, ACC navigation and restorative justice programmes. Its holistic approach recognises that improving wellbeing often means helping people navigate complex health and social systems while building resilience and long-term independence.

What stood out most during their presentation was the genuine passion Richard and Sagar have for their work. It was clear they understand the difference they can make in people's lives and the importance of providing support when people need it most.

Fantastic effort from the log splitting and firewood team at our Rotary Park working bee last Tuesday.

A small but hardworking team split numerous large old man pine logs at Rotary Park last Tuesday.

11 cubic meters of firewood was generated, loaded and delivered to buyers. We gained $1100 for the Rotary Park project. A fantastic result!
