Town & Country Group project Bike Repair Stations
Special thanks go to club members Peter Jackson and Neil Lyons, with help from President Gordon Tucker, who braved a chilly Dunedin morning to get the site preparation underway for the new bolt on bike repair station on the West Harbour Bike Trail.
Funding for this project and a similar undertaking at the top of Signal Hill’s “Big Easy” was provided by our club, matched by a grant from Rotary District 9980.
Last Weeks Speaker
Last weeks speaker was Rotary’s own Carmen Houlahan. She has a BA in theatre and a masters in entrepreneurial business.  Her professional career is both interesting and varied, ranging from being a journalist, magazine editor, columnist, playwright and marketing and communications contractor, and now DCC councillor.  As Carmen said “life will never be dull”. For example, she started our meeting by winning the raffle but, sadly, failing to extract the joker.
Having missed out on her first attempt to be elected to Council, she decided to have another go.  Her effective strategy was to run for Mayor at the same time as standing for Council, thereby hugely increasing her opportunities to speak and increase her name recognition.  Having been elected, she enjoyed the induction for new Councillors and getting up to speed on what was happening and what the City needed to do.
As a Councillor she strives to be true to her own values and those upon which she campaigned.  Carmen would like to be seen as a Councillor who is open, honest and fair. She has found that being a Councillor her life is under scrutiny.  She said that some comments on social media are not always nice.  Carmen has learnt that you have to be very careful about what you say both on the record and off the cuff.  She described lively moments around discussions about possible pedestrian changes in the Octagon and George Street.
Carmen is currently reading the huge paper work supporting the development of Dunedin’s long-term plan.  The Council is setting priorities and managing the ten-year budget to facilitate the implementation of the plan. Some high profile, desirable projects might have to be put on hold because of Covid.
Carmen says that being a councillor is a dream job.  She says that Dunedin faces lots of issues and she believes the Council needs to bring the people on the journey with it.
Rotary Trusts Opportunity
Are you interested in learning more about the Rotary Trusts and having the opportunity to assist?
The Club is looking for someone who would enjoy making contact with individuals and organisations who have received grants from the Trusts.  This is not time consuming.  There are about fifteen grants made each year and contact is mostly by phone or email.  While you will find out more about how the trusts operate, the remaining trust work, (including monthly and annual reporting and financial work) will continue to be done by the Trusts Administrator (David Ojala).  This task would suit a person who enjoys meeting people, giving them good news and keeping the club informed.
If you are interested or would like more information, contact David dojala@xtra.co.nz in the first instance
Straight to the point! Thanks to District 7070

Technical Problems
Some club members with user@xtra.co.nz email addresses  may not have been receiving their bulletins; or have found them diverted to their "spam" folder.
This problem has been noted in another District and found to be related to the size of some of the image files in the bulletin. I believe that this could be the cause of our problem as well. For example, in last weeks bulletin the picture of the Rotaractors at Smaills Beach was quite a high resolution image (with correspondingly large file size).
This week I have made a conscious effort to reduce image resolution where necessary so that the file size is within the guidelines. If this does not solve the problem, members may need to tweek things at their end as per the instructions here.
My apologies to those affected - Bruce Collier

As the price of carbon increases, the impact it can have on a business needs to be fully understood. Large industrial sites in particular are likely to feel this impact but it is not all doom and gloom. Some businesses are identifying the opportunity that carbon can provide for offsetting, marketing and hedging. This case study will outline that process that Ahika undertakes with its larger industrial clients around managing carbon risk.
Lloyd is Director and Energy Consultant for Ahika Consulting, with a background as a plumber/gasfitter for over 15 years, and a subsequent BSc Energy Studies degree from the University of Otago - graduating 2006.
Lloyd has been involved in all aspects of energy management.  This includes feasibility assessments for energy efficiency projects, site metering for large industrial processes and developing intensity benchmarks and plant audits, along with a particular interest in the wood biomass sector with a number of wood feasibility projects for energy plant, and the carbon based emission trading scheme.
