Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.

Holly was born on the West Coast (Hokitika) in 1994 and has recently learnt of her Ngai Tahu descent and is now on a journey to learn more of her heritage and Te Reo. She is a twin to her brother Johnathon who has a focus on woodchopping. Holly began her love of athletics at age twelve, she always loved sport and picked up the shot put at the local club and without any training showed herself to be pretty good. This was noticed by local, Danny Sparks who took her under his wing and coached her. Holly attended her first World Paralympics when 16 in 2011. This marked her journey into the elite ranks of sport. She realised that to progress she needed to move to a larger centre and relocated to Dunedin and came under the coaching influence of Raylene Bates who improved her performance and javelin technique. Holly went from training once a week at the local park on the concrete cricket pitch as her run up to training every day twice a day. Bruce Cowan who has known Holly for many years outlined her achievements through the years to the Gold medal at Tokyo in 2021 (finally beating her "arch rival" Holly Arnold of Wales.) An unknown epilogue is that after winning Gold Holly went and thanked each of the officials who had been out in the rain throughout the competition. Unbeknown to Holly the officials put her forward for the Visa award which epitomised the spirit of the games, Holly won the award which came with a grant of $50,000 US ($75,000 NZ) which is able to be donated to a charity of the athletes choice being for Holly the Ronald McDonald House South Island. To top off 2021 Holly was awarded the order of merit for services to sport in the Queens Birthday honours, very special and totally unexpected. A further highlight from 2020/21 was being featured in a video game for para sport .
Holly indicated that she has committed to her sport for two more years with a target to defend her gold in Paris.
The Board has approved the following nominating committee to choose our President in 2025-26: Grant Chirnside, Bruce Cowan, Brian Daniels (chair), John Drummond, Fiona Nyhof, Cameron Olsen, Katie Slaughter, Jackie St John, Gordon Tucker, Peter Jackson and Anna Thomas. The nominating committee plans to meet soon. Any member is welcome to confidentially contact any member of the committee to put forward a name for consideration by the nominating committee

This fun and exciting free fundraiser event (supporting Orokonui Saddleback Translocation project and Revamping Rotary Park) is on Thursday 10 November at 5.30pm at the Community Gallery, 20 Princes St, Dunedin.
We will be having viewings of the artworks on Tuesday 8th November and Wednesday 9th November between 2-4pm. These will also be at the Community Gallery as per the main event.

All artworks will cost $150 regardless of who the artist is. Really great for Christmas shopping! Getting a well known artists’ artwork is very much a bargain!

Days for Girls
Empowering women in times of disaster project.
Our club have supported this first District 9999 collaborative project that will be supplying the ‘Days for Girls’ sustainable menstrual hygiene kits for inclusion in Emergency Response Kits destined for the Pacific Islands. The project is in collaboration with Days for Girls (DfG NZ). This group arranges all the logistics for securing the materials for the kits and organises volunteer groups to make the products. There is a Dunedin based project sewing group leader who will run training workshops and provide the space to make and sew the kits for interested volunteers. The kits are produced to exacting standards so that they are washable and reusable and last for up to 5 years. The key to realising this project now is to make thousands of the kits! Volunteer groups in the South Island are currently based in Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Nelson group currently meets twice a week and the volunteers ‘love it’. The call is for us to help the local Dunedin group by boosting their numbers. The people don’t have to be Rotarians to help. And, they don’t all have to be good at sewing. If you think you know anyone who might be interested please get in touch with Fiona who will be able to provide more information about when and where the first workshops will be held.
Wasp Eradication Project Feb 2023
Just a "heads-up" that we are planning to repeat the deployment of bait stations this summer - the actual date in late February will be dependent on monitoring of wasp activity.
The five week roster is the most accurate and members are urged to check the Duty Roster webpage regularly.
