Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Katie for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders @ the dish cafe
The café has noted that many of our Rotary members and guests are now ordering on arrival.  This makes it difficult for them  to manage staffing levels and keep up the level of service for us, as well as their other guests.
As a club, we appreciate the use of the venue facilities free of charge. To maintain this it is appreciated if you would please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the menu ahead of time!
Email your order to orders@thedishcafe.co.nz by 11am

NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

There will be Special General Meeting of the club, at club lunch meeting on 4th April 2024. The meeting is to consider a possible change to the Deeds of the five trusts that would provide more flexibility and consistency around audit and review.
The resolution is:

“Each year the Trustees must review the annual accounts for the Trust and may decide, in their absolute discretion, whether the financial statements should be audited or reviewed by:
A qualified auditor in accordance with the applicable auditing and assurance standards; or some other suitably qualified and experienced person

The JR McKenzie Trust
Guest Speaker Review
Jonathan Usher 29 February 2024
Our club member and former District Governor, Jonathan Usher spoke to the club about his role with the J R McKenzie Trust.  McKenzie’s stores opened in New Zealand in 1910 and by 1980 there were 75 stores nationwide.  Sir John McKenzie was the founder and he believed that a business should share its prosperity with the public.  So in 1938 he established the J. R. McKenzie Youth Education Trust and in 1940 the J. R. McKenzie Trust.  The latter with the conation of the current equivalent of $5.5 million plus one third of the McKenzie’s stores annual profits.
The capital of the Trusts was enhanced over the years, and son Roy (also to be Sir Roy) donated the land on which the Outward Bound sits.  Our Rotary club has been involved with the Youth Education Trust as one of our members (currently Grant Chirnside) is administrator of the regional fund which predominantly helps with the costs of school uniforms.
Dunedin Rotary appoints one trustee to the J R McKenzie Trust.  Jonathan has been that appointee for the last ten years and Grant Chirnside is taking over that position this year.  The Trust capital has now accumulated to $140 million and pays out $6 - $8 million per year.  The policy is to pay out a small number of large amounts to really make an impact.

The full transcript of Jonathan's talk can be downloaded here.

Town and Country Safari 2024
Another successful Town & Country group Safari last weekend- to the Catlins.
15 members enjoyed the annual T&C Safari last weekend very capably organised by Don McEwan.

We had an informative tour guided by Donald Stewart around the new Calder Stewart steel fabrication plant & office complex at Revolution Hills near Milton. Technology & quality control in the fabrication plant were amazing. We then headed for accommodation at Kaka Point on Friday. On Saturday Steven & Rhonda Bamford hosted us for a tour & morning tea at their award-winning dairy & sheep, and cropping farm south of Balclutha. The Bamford’s focus on technology & animal health to provide the best outcomes for staff & animals.
Craig & Anna Whiteside at Waihwera gave us insight into growing a variety of seeds (26) on their property while maintaining healthy soils. Will Clarke hosted us at his 1200 herd dairy farm sout of Clinton showing us his new 90 bale Rotary milking platform & 1400 cow wintering shed costing $5million to build gave us insight into the logic of scale for this operation. Seeing ninety cows on one circular milking platform at a time and the massive wintering barn  was amazing.
The main thing that came through though was the absolute devotion, enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills of the farmers we met.
On Sunday we visited Telford and had an informative tour of the campus, including remembering the legacy of Letch Sewell and the establishment of the club's Rural Education Trust Fund.

Thanks to Don for all the arrangements. Some of us partly repaid him with a quick change of a flat tyre on his car.

(Planning for next year’s Safari in Central Otago is already underway.

SUCCESSFUL QUIZ NIGHT!
The quiz night last Tuesday was really successful, we had 11 teams and 41 generous guests who purchased lots of raffle tickets. There were 46 fantastic prizes on offer! We raised $954, the majority being for the Rotary Park project, which is great. Thanks to everyone who contributed prizes and the Community Projects Team, the Otago Golf Club,
Quiz Master Paul Fielding and his assistant, and to the Rotoractors.
Congratulations to Alastair's Loganberry team for once again being the winning team!

Wasp Eradication Project
A team of volunteers from our club joined other Rotarians and friends on Sat 24th to lay wasp bait around the Town Belt.
Collection of the bait stations was on Sun 3rd. Read all about the project in The Star. The Rotary Dunedin team took care of a large area in the Ross Creek area. About 1/3 of the baits placed had been taken. Thanks to Bruce Cowan for organising our team and to all the volunteers.
Can you help?

HOST FAMILY SOUGHT for visiting teen mid-late July
A host family, preferably with teenage kids is being sought for a young student from Germany who has Rotary connections.
14 year old Leopold Staude is planning a New Zealand visit during his summer holidays, he'll be arriving in Dunedin mid July and wants to stay until the end of July. He'd like to stay with a family preferably with kids of similar age. If you or someone you know could provide a home stay like this, please contact Ah Lek Tay (Email below).
The Rotary family connection is that Leopold's grandfather and Fraser Morrison,  who was a Rotary Dunedin club member, met and formed a lasting friendship towards the end of WW2. Leopold's father is a Rotarian in Leipzig, Germany, and he met with our DG,  Ah-Lek Tay last year at the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne.
It would be great if we can find a home stay for Leopold. More information can be provided if required. Please Contact Ah-Lek Tay: email:
