Meeting Attendance
Members are encouraged to attend Thursday lunch meetings whenever they can. They are an opportunity for fellowship, to hear interesting speakers, and to catch up with our Club activities.
Remember that if you are unable to join our lunch meetings in person, we can still provide a Zoom option. Please contact President Fiona for details of the link to use.

Meal Orders - Update
The café has noted that many of our  Rotary members and guests are now ordering on arrival.  This makes it difficult for them  to manage staffing levels and keep up the level of service for us, as well as their other guests.
As a club, we appreciate the use of the venue facilities free of charge.
To maintain this it is appreciated if you would please remember to pre-order your food and drink from the lunch menu ahead of time!

Email orders will be accepted now up until 11am  orders@thedishcafe.co.nz

The current $20 lunch menu (includes a drink) can be downloaded from here (updated 23 January 2023)

Last Weeks Speaker
Our guest speaker last week was Dr Sanjana Hattotuwa.  He is originally from Sri Lanka but now lectures at Otago University.  He makes a study of social media and the spread of disinformation amongst us.  He assured us that there is a lot of disinformation and violent basis of criticism spread throughout New Zealand.  He said that there is a lot of abuse against people of colour and against women.  He cited the parliamentary protest as an example of deep discontent within segments of society.  The pandemic was the accelerant for loss of trust, and trust has been an important part of our society until recently.

Editors comment:
Some members may have found Sanjana Hattotuwas revelations last week quite suprising, confronting, even scary!
If you wish to further reflect on his presentation the slides which accompanied his talk can be downloaded from click here (including the wordcloud of hate directed at former P.M. Jacinda Ardern - slide 11)

Med students volunteer to spread mulch at the Hospice!
On Fri 17th there were 16 student volunteers turn up to help spread a huge load of 10T of mulch around the Hospice garden grounds. For the mostly second year Med students it was a chance to meet and get to know their fellow classmates, and help out in the community at the same time .
It was great to work with the enthusiastic team from the Otago University Medical Students Association who’ve said to reach out to them again  when we have more volunteering opportunities for them.
Many thanks to the team of four Rotarians (two from St Kilda Sunrise & 2 from our club) and especially to Andrew Tiffany (St Kilda Sunrise club) who liased with the Hospice chief gardener volunteer Jane to make this event happen!
Rotary & Days for Girls
Debra Gibbs from The Rotary Club of Richmond is the project champion for the Rotary NZ project  collaboration with Days for Girls to supply at least 18OO of the immaculately hand made sustainable and long lasting reusable sanitary kits for inclusion in Emergency Reponse Kits (ERK) destined for the Pacific Islands. The ERK’s  are packed by Rotary volunteers under the coordination ,  management and guidance of Rotary NZ World Community Service (RNZWCS). Our club joined with many other clubs to   contributed $1500 towards the project to include the Days for Girls kits in the ERKs for the Pacific which are scheduled to be shipped later this year.
Sewing the kits is all done by volunteers , at special working bees . We have an active group located in Dunedin who welcomes both men and women volunteers to help, regardless of your ability to sew, there is a job for everyone. We will post a notice when the next opportunity arises.
RNZWCS are also coordinating fund raising efforts to help those most in need in the aftermath of devastating Cyclone Gabrielle ( and the Türkiye/Syrian earthquake). Please refer to your 9999 weekly newsletter for more info or visit www.rnzwcs.org for more info.

Pine Cone Project
After being postponed from last week the Pine Cone Collection is now scheduled for Monday (20th Feb) at 7pm
Access is not too difficult, about 300 meters from Townley road (beside Scott Technology in Kaikorai Valley) to the paddock as shown by the arrow.  The paddock is about 250 m long, sloping but not steep, with pine-cones scattered the entire length.  Most vehicles would best be parked on Townley Road unless paddock-capable.

    Gardening gloves if you wish
Bags for the collection will be provided
