Stories
Fiona Nyhof - Who am I?

Recently at Rotary we were treated to a wonderful story of scots success in finding a new home in Dunedin.
Her parents were typical hard working scots who sought a better future in New Zealand. Her Mum had been “in service” since the age of 14, working six and a half days a week. Her father was in the joinery trade in Scotland. They met at a dance hall and became engaged. He left Scotland for Dunedin NZ and was followed by her Mum. He was a successful builder and the family of six thrived. They enjoyed outdoor pursuits skating, fishing, picnics and flying. The family moved from home to home. Fiona attended 4 schools. At Fairfield the Cleveland family were close neighbours and friends.
Fiona’s Dad established Melrose Motor Lodge and Fiona worked as receptionist, cleaner, waitress, typist and cashier. At 3 she enjoyed a family sea trip to Scotland, and at 14 in the 1970’s then by jet plane. Fiona was good at French at school, so her Dad took her on a jet trip to London, then to Paris, picking up a brand new Citroen. Her Dad expected her to be fluent in French, but this was not the case. Fortunately for all of us, she dropped French at school and took up Food Science later.
Fiona is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology. During my time as President, she successfully took on the job as editor of the first editions of the NZIFST national journal.  - Graeme Leith
The Changing Face of Rotary
Remember Kriddles Roberts a couple of years back? She raised a few eyebrows when she was elected President of Waitakere Rotary. Well she's in the news again as founder of the charity "Unity in Our Community".
Below is the link to the recent RNZ ‘The detail’ program about the partnership between Kriddles Roberts and Rotary to provide aid to people in West Auckland. Well worth listening to!!
Random Act of Kindness
Too many cooks may spoil the broth but when it comes to baking biscuits -  the more the merrier!!!  A team from Community Projects group, Rotaractors, friends and partners spent Saturday morning baking and packaging 284 Anzac biscuits for distribution to Citizens Advice Bureau volunteers and other community agencies as a token of our appreciation.
Rotary International is considering a project to address
membership, public image, communication, leadership, and fundraising challenges to help define a more sustainable future for Rotary.
Our region, or Zone 8, which includes Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, has been selected as one of two potential regions from across the globe to pilot a regional approach to governance.

Photos Wanted!
As we are now moving towards the production phase of the centenary publication, we are calling for good quality (sharp, in focus, high resolution) images of club activities from the past 25 years. Ideally the images you submit will have a descriptor, be dated, and have the names of the people featured in the image. If they are not digital, Katie can have them scanned during a Rotary meeting and returned to you immediately.
Think, fun activities, members being awarded for service, fellowship events, conference pics - anything that is engaging and demonstrates what we do best.
Thank you
Craig and Katie
