Stories
Community Projects Group
The Community project’s team recently secured a fairly large parcel of  donated coloured craft paper and card. We’ve repackaged it and it’s ready to donate to some primary schools, including Liberton Christian School and Ravensbourne School. Here’s Jenny and David Neil, with Fiona Nyhof after completing the re-packing job on Saturday 6 March.

Youth Wellness Trust feedback
The Club has received feedback following a donation made to the Otago Youth Wellness Trust:
We purchased the bean bags in January – and I can report already they are getting constant use all over the building and outside in the shade of our trees.  We purchased three worth $300 each for $140 each.  They are actually filled with a form of memory foam rather than beans; have a tough waterproof cover and supremely comfortable.
I have attached a photo of staff trying them out!
Again, thank you sincerely for your support.  It means so much to the staff and our rangatahi that the community is supporting them/us in this way.
Last Weeks Speaker
Stuck in Auckland because of CoVid restrictions, leading cancer researcher Prof. Parry Guildford spoke to the club via "Zoom".

Duty Roster Coordinator
To allow Cameron to prepare for his forthcoming role as President we require a volunteer to take over the task of maintaining the Duty Roster for club meetings. In the past a spreadsheet has been used but this is not essential (pen & paper would work just as well!). Main duties are to extend the roster each month; and email reminders to the duty team each week.
Anyone willing to consider this position please contact Cameron to discuss.

Rally Otago 16-18 April 2021

Rally Otago will run on the 3rd weekend in April just 2 months away. We have been asked to marshal the Anzac Ave Super Special so we need around 20 people between the 3 clubs i.e. 6/7 from each club. Normal start time for the stage is 3pm so team leaders need to be in place from 2pm.
Covid will mean there are few if any overseas entries but we can expect a stellar NZ entry with Hayden Paddon running no 1

Can we get an indication of numbers by late March & names straight after Easter? Thanks, Peter Jackson

One of the least known Antarctic Explorers

The Rev Arnold Spencer-Smith (1883-1916), chaplain and photographer for the Ross Sea party of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, died in the Antarctic and was buried on the ice.
In the past our club has hosted a guest speaker on the subject, and through the Club Trust contributed towards a proposed commemorative stained glass window at All Saints Church.
Tuesday March 9th 2021 is the 105th anniversary of the death of Rev. Spencer-Smith, and you are invited to events to be held at All Saints' Church in his honour.
At 5.30pm on March 9th there will be a Mass led by Bishop Steven Benford, using the chalice and paten Spencer-Smith took to Antarctica.
During the mass a hymn 'Creator of the Wilderness' by Christchurch hymnwriter and musician Marnie Barrell in honour of Spencer-Smith will have its world premiere.
Cr. Christine Garey, Deputy Mayor and Prof. Miles Lamare of the Department of Marine Biology, University of Otago will read at the service. The artist and writer Claire Beynon will recite a poem, the Selwyn College choral scholars will sing 'The Snow' by Edward Elgar.
Following the service there will be a reception in All Saints’ Hall.
At 7.00pm the 3rd Annual Arnold Spencer-Smith Lecture will take place at All Saints' hall.
Moira White, Curator, Humanities, Otago Museum will speak on ‘People and penguins: Otago Museum and the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition’
You are welcome to join in this opportunity to remember and honour the selflessness and courage of one of the least-known Antarctic explorers.

As Chancellor (appointed by the Minister of Education), Dr Somerville takes part in the governance of the university but not its active management. He is a Fellow of Knox College, the Chair of the Health & Safety and Ethics Compliance Committee, the Convener of the Appeals Board and a member of the Capital Development Committee, the Audit & Risk Committee, the Finance and Budget Committee, the Honorary Degrees Committee and a Trustee of the University of Otago Foundation Trust. With such a varied involvement he is bound to have some interesting tales to tell!
