During the launch of his book "Helping Hands" a history of the last 100 years of Rotary in Dunedin, Craig threw out some "teasers" - the answers to which can be found by purchasing and reading the book!!
Here is an example:
*What are John Drummond’s views on the Welcome Song?
It is a rollicking good read that you won’t want to miss, you can purchase for $35 per copy.
Jordana Whyte is the Trust Manager for the Wildlife Hospital Dunedin, an organisation she co-founded in 2015. She also serves as chair of the NZ Sea Lion Trust. Her previous experience involves being a Project Manager for the Cosy Homes Trust and she has a community development and grant writing background. She is also on the Predator Free Dunedin trust board. At the Hospital Jordana does everything that doesn’t involve the patients. Interestingly, patients must be native NZ species. Located next to the Polytech, the Wildlife Hospital has 3 Vets and 2 Vet Nurses on the staff. Founder Dr Lisa Agilla is a well-qualified wildlife and avian specialist, with degrees from Massey. The Hospital has 3 wards – seabirds (especially penguins), forest birds including Kiwi, and an ICU ward. ICU is especially important for rare species who often need isolating. The surgical theatre is well equipped for aesthetics, and there is equipment for X-ray, transfusion, incubators, fluid pumps, endoscopy, lab equipment and a therapy pool. This pool is especially important for seabirds. Their care often involves re-establishing behaviours necessary for their return to the wild. With patients from all over the South Island the Hospital is often at full capacity, although right now it is quiet. Some statistics from 2022 624 patients 47 different species 62% threatened or at-risk status 80% success rate!
p.s. looking for a unique gift for a special person? Christmas? Birthday? Anniversary? The hospitals on-line store offers virtual gifts such as a "bucket of fish". It’s amazing how much fish your average penguin can put away! https://www.wildlifehospitaldunedin.org.nz/xmas-store/bucket-of-fish

We are still a little short of helpers to make 450 dozen of the product:
As mentioned at a recent lunch meeting, the club has received correspondence from Michael Staude of Leipzig, Germany. He is a Rotarian attending the RI convention in Melbourne next week and is keen to meet Rotarians from Dunedin because of a friendship between his late Grandfather (Hans-Ehrhardt Oberlander) and Past President of our club the late Fraser Morrison.
Hans, a German prisoner-of-war and Fraser, a NZ Army Sergeant met in Italy in 1945. Hans was the only one amongst the 20 prisoners who spoke any english. The two men became friends during the month that the prisoners were being supervised by the Kiwis. After the war the two men attempted to maintain contact (Hans even had dreams of one day emigrating to NZ) but the political situation in Europe meant that even correspondence was impossible.
More than forty years later when the Berlin Wall was torn down, Hans renewed his efforts to find the friend that he knew only as "Morrie" Morrison using agencies such as Red Cross, the NZ Army, and the police. In 1994 the Red Cross was able to identify "Fraser" Morrison and locate his address in Dunedin. Later that year Hans' children who had heard endless stories of "Morrie", helped their parents put the money together for a six week campervan holiday in New Zealand.
According to Michael " It must have been very touching, when my grandfather Hans and Fraser met again. My grandparents told me that when they arrived at the Morrison home, Fraser had decorated the house with New Zealand and German flags, went to the piano and played to two national anthems."
Bruce Cowan has emailed Michael with some personal recollections of Fraser Morrison, and Assistant Governor Ah-Lek Tay who is attending the convention has also made contact with him and hopes to meet him in Melbourne.
Supermarket food collection
Sat 10 June at Countdown Andy Bay and Countdown South supermarkets.
We need 2-4 volunteers to work in 1- 2 hour shifts between 9am and 3pm.
We have an opportunity for members to participate in a research study at the University of Otago
concerning domestic electricity use. The researchers will donate $40 per participant, which we could put to use for our Rotary Park Upgrade centenary project.
The research studies how households choose their electricity provider. Those taking part would need
to be involved in making decisions for their household about what electricity provider they use. Only one person per household can take part. Those who attend may also learn about opportunities to save money on their electricity bill.
Participants would take part in a research session (of no more than one hour) in a university computer lab. Before coming along they would need to provide us with a copy of their most recent power bill. On the night, participants would be asked some survey questions (including their postal address, age, etc). They would use one of the computers in the computer lab to visit a website that provides information on how much they could save by changing electricity providers. About one month after the session, we will send them an email asking a small number of follow-up questions. Let’s make up a group of volunteers who fit the criteria
- Make decisions about what household electricity provider they use,
- Willing to email the researchers a copy of their household electricity bill.
Date: 7.30pm on Wednesday 7 th June for not more than one hour.
Place: a University of Otago computer lab, you will be given directions on how to get there.
What to do? Please Email Fiona at fiona.robin@xtra.co.nz to let her know if you are interested by or before 1 June.
Fiona will advise the researchers of your name and email address, and they will contact you to ask
for a copy of your electricity account to be sent to them, as well as give you directions on how to
find the venue for the study.
N.B. Please see notice elsewhere in the bulletin re venue change for this meeting.
