Alistair is a retired surgeon who has done voluntary work overseas with a charity called Mercy Ships. They have a fleet of hospital ships which are often moored for months at a time in the port of some country or other. Alistair has twice been to the country of Benin which is in West Africa. He has also worked with them in other African countries.
He said that the crew of each ship were all volunteers and came from over 40 countries. The newest ship is called The Global Mercy and has 6 operating theatres. Two of the surgeries are specifically for ophthalmology work. Alistair showed examples of some of the various types of medical relief that the programme offers.
