“Thoughts from Conference” President Katie recently attended the D9999 conference and was impressed by the presentation given by Jennifer Jones (Rotary International President 2022-2023). Katie reflected that her focus as our president had been on local projects, and it was good to look at the bigger picture at the work that is done internationally by Rotary to create sustainable change and difference to our world. We are all aware of the difference that the polio campaign has made to eradicating polio. We have achieved a 99% success rate but there is still some work to do to eradicate it entirely from the world. Jennifer spoke about the importance of the work to empower woman and girls and the flow on effect that had as they became advocates for better health and welfare outcomes in their own communities. Katie has come away from conference with a better understanding of the wider impact of Rotary. She encouraged us to go to the website and check out the projects on the website.
Next year the Rotary District 9999 conference will be in Dunedin, and we should all plan to attend - the Town Hall at Easter.
Inspired by President Katie's reflections on District 9999 conference, we enjoyed Katie's last lunch meeting as club President 2023-24 in fine fellowship mode!

From left, Fiona, Jackie, Bruce, Anna, Jonathan, Ron and Peter (obscured). We all know that Jonathan has moved to Cromwell and that sadly we are losing him as a member of our club, but there was good news, at the changeover event, he announced he will be transferring to the Cromwell Club.
Peter Gouverner has been the Area Governor for our Dunedin, Mosgiel, Taieri and Milton district. He was officially thanked with a certificate of appreciation for his service by outgoing DG Phil Gully.
More than 100 attendees from all over the South Island enjoyed the District Governor's changeover lunch event held at the Edgar Centre, it was a great success. DG Phil Gully took the opportunity to reflect on his lasting impressions of the many club visits, the Facebook Rotary 9999 video posts he made, the highly successful one day conference in Christchurch with guest Jennifer Jones, and all inspiring and innovative projects that Rotarians are doing in our communities. Phil and his wife Anna enjoyed warm hospitality and made friendships along the way.
Phil reminded us of the need to meet the challenges to address falling membership numbers across the district. However, his primary goal as DG was to make sure Rotary is fun. Rotary International's incoming President Stephanie Urchick's catch phrase for Rotary is to make Rotary 'Irresistible' with the theme 'The Magic of Rotary'. Who better then to MC the Changeover event with magic and humour than our own extraordinarily talented Rotarian, Jonathan Usher.
Incoming DG David McKissock a Rotarian from Invercargill Sunrise was warmly welcomed into his new and significant role. He told three stories of the 'Magic of Rotary', Rotary moments where you realize that the work we do is truly important and does make meaningful differences that 'create hope in the world'. One story was incoming RI President Stephanie Urchick's, about a water sanitation project, the next was Dave's own experience at conference in Melbourne where he was enthusiastically thanked by a Ukranian delegate for being Rotarian from the South Island NZ, because we had contributed to significant financial help for a water filtration project that helped numerous communities cope, and lastly a heart wrenching story where Rotary's outstanding Interplast service kicked in to bring hope and a better future to an otherwise outcast deformed child in the Pacific with plastic surgery. Dave is an excellent communicator, and we look forward to seeing and hearing much more from him this year. If you'd like to know more about Interplast, speak to our district rep, and fellow member, Bruce Cowan and read about the Interplast and Rotary partnership and projects on the website https://interplast.org.au/get-involved/rotary/
We wish Dave all the very best for his year as DG9999, follow him on Facebook at DG Dave's Adventures- https://www.facebook.com/people/DG-Daves-Adventures/61561239726701/
