Last week we were priviliged to visit Forsyth Barr House and see close-up how a 1960's "eyesore" has been transformed into a modern local iconic "landmark". This redevelopment essentially involved gutting the building to a shell, recladding, orienting it's entranceway to the Octagon and adding a level. Developer Chris Barnes was an entertaining and genial host and spoke frankly and honestly about the project, sharing his opinions on supply chain issues, CoVid19, dealings with council, project management, and much more - sometimes controversial, and not necessarily how they are portrayed in mainstream media. One key point in his philosophy is to support local businesses!! On a very personal note, in response to a question he explained just how and why he transitioned from Banking to Commercial Property development.
Incognito Art
Resulting from the survey of members conducted in April, a committee has begun to organise an Incognito Art fundraiser.
The committee is seeking donations of A4 artworks which will be sold anonymously - Some of the artists may be high profile professionals, some may be semi professional , e.g may belong to an art club, some may be well known public figures, but not known for being an artist, and some of the artists could be anyone. Do you have any artistic contacts who you could approach regarding donating a piece of their work? Sarah has circulated a suggested letter but feel free to use your own words.
Photos Wanted!
As we are now moving towards the production phase of the centenary publication, we are calling for good quality (sharp, in focus, high resolution) images of club activities from the past 25 years. Ideally the images you submit will have a descriptor, be dated, and have the names of the people featured in the image. If they are not digital, Katie can have them scanned during a Rotary meeting and returned to you immediately.
Think, fun activities, members being awarded for service, fellowship events, conference pics - anything that is engaging and demonstrates what we do best.
As part of the centennial publication, I am trying to faithfully capture Paul Harris Fellowships, either gained by members prior to 1998, who remained members within the last 25 period, or awarded by the club in that time. While I am confident I have recorded those with PHFs who are still in the club, resigned or died, I have less certainty about those who have moved to other clubs. Rotary Foundation records do not allow us access to other clubs' documents. This means that members with PHFs, who have left our club and joined another one, are lost to us. Through some sleuthing work, I have made contact with and/or established the status of the following; Bill Dunbar, Peter Haines, Stuart Heal, W John Henderson, John Leader, Steve Metzger and Clive Rennie.
I have tried contacting Derek Valentine, and through him I should be able to reach Ian Shore, but I may have an old address. I believe both joined the Wanaka Club. I would be pleased to receive contact details for them and any other member who left our club since 1998 and who has moved to another club. If you can help, please let me know.
Honorary member Gillian Bremner has sent another very "newsy" letter describing her life in Botswana including camping on the banks of the Limpopo River (and going to sleep listening to the snorting of hippos in the river nearby), building a snake pit, and buying a bee hive.
Jans initial introduction to Rotary was as a partner to a Rotarian in 1990. She loved hosting several Rotary Exchange students over several years and attended many lively district conferences.
In 1998 Jan joined the Rotary Club of Pahiatua and undertook many roles including bulletin editor, Club and Community Chair and President 2002-03. After relocating to Christchurch and taking a break from Rotary involvement, it was not long before she was invited to join the Rotary Club of Ferrymead where she undertook the role of President 2011-12 In 2015 Jan was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for services to the club during the difficult earthquake years. In 2019 she transferred to the Rotary Club of Lincoln.
